Who We Are: Urban and Rural Population

The number of older adults living in rural areas is an important issue in South Carolina, since many rural seniors have to travel long distances to receive medical and other services. Seniors living in urban areas enjoy greater economic resources, improved access to health care services, fewer risks for unintentional injury, and increased availability of social supports. According to 2000 Census data, 40.7 percent of South Carolina's population over 50 lived in rural areas. In the same year, 31.9 percent of the population 85 years and older lived in rural areas.
